How do i connect two computers through the modems without connecting to the internet?

I have to computers one with the O/S ME and the other XP home edition. I want to connect the two computers without using the paralell ports. I think i need to create a dial in server but i need help with this on these O/S’s.

Buy two cheap network cards and get a crossover cable. Much easier and simpler.

Computers are crossed to create dialup using the network between the recieve and transmit wires are near each other and you could then set up the opposite position.
