How do I connect two home computers to work and share together?

I was wondering if it is possible for me to connect two computers I own two work simultaneously together. I own a 2007 model HP Pavilion and the other is a 2000 model Compaq. I never wanted to throw the compaq away, but I wanted to put it to use somehow for storage. I wanted to know if I can join them together to work together like that.

Just take the hard drive out and put it in the new computer or external hard disk drive. Or just sell it and get a bigger hard drive.
