Boy are some of these answers newbies! Univac and IBM were the two big names back in the ’50’s, but just about every big name in technology tried their hand at it at one time or another. Control Data Corporation, Honeywell, General Electric, Digital Equipment Corporation (aka PDP) are the names that come to mind.

In fact, back in the ’50’s and ’60’s, people who didn’t know any better often referred to computers as “IBM machines.”

    Hope that helps.

The CTC Datapoint 2200, in 1970, was probably the first device that could be called a microcomputer. The Processor Technology SOL-20 came out in 1975 (with a cassette operating system - no more toggling in a boot loader by hand). The MITS Altair 8800 and SWTP 6800 came out at about the same time.

If you want to go back earlier than that, the Atanasoff–Berry Computer (1941) was the one of the earliest electronic computing devices, followed by the ENIAC in 1946.
